The Google Play Store listing for Shizuku is outdated and effectively deprecated — it lags far behind the official GitHub releases. The error “This app isn’t available for your device because it was made for an older version of Android” describes the stale store listing, not your phone. The fix is to install the current official release, v13.6.0, directly from GitHub.

What the error message actually means

  • “This app isn’t available for your device” — the store filtered the listing out for your device or region.
  • “because it was made for an older version of Android” — the listing’s target SDK is old, and Google now hides such listings on newer Android versions.
  • Neither statement says anything about whether Shizuku itself runs on your phone. The current official release, v13.6.0, supports Android 7.0 through Android 16 QPR1.

The fix — do this

  1. Go to the official releases page: https://github.com/RikkaApps/Shizuku/releases
  2. Download the v13.6.0 APK asset (shizuku-v13.6.0.r1086.2650830c-release.apk, ~2.45 MB).
  3. On your phone, allow Install unknown apps for your browser when prompted (Settings → Apps → Special app access).
  4. Open the downloaded file and install it.
  5. Open Shizuku and confirm the About screen shows v13.6.0 (build r1086).

That’s it — no account tricks, no region changes, no modified APKs needed.

Why this happens

The Play Store listing simply hasn’t been kept current with GitHub releases. Google’s compatibility messaging then blames the app’s target SDK, which makes it look like your device is the problem. It isn’t — the listing is.

This is also why some older guides still recommend the Play Store for “automatic updates”: that advice is outdated. The Play Store copy is frozen in time; GitHub is where releases actually happen. See the latest version page for the current official build.

Is sideloading safe here?

Sideloading is only as safe as the source. The official GitHub releases page (github.com/RikkaApps/Shizuku) is the developer’s own distribution point — that is the safe source. Do not grab “Shizuku APK” from random download sites, Telegram channels, or Drive links in video descriptions; those copies can’t be verified.

Before installing, compare the file name and build number against the release page, and check the hash published on the official GitHub release page.

This site does not host APK files — we link to official sources only.

Frequently Asked Questions

Shizuku isn’t showing in the Play Store at all. Why?

Same cause: the deprecated listing is filtered or hidden for many devices and regions. Use the official GitHub releases page instead — it’s the current distribution channel.

Will I miss updates without the Play Store?

No — but updates are manual. Check the GitHub releases page (or our latest version page) periodically. Installing a new official APK over the old one preserves your app authorizations.

Is it safe to enable “Install unknown apps”?

It’s safe when you enable it only for your browser (or file manager) and only install the APK you downloaded from the official GitHub page. You can turn the permission back off afterward.

Does sideloading Shizuku void my warranty or trip Knox?

No. Sideloading a normal app doesn’t modify your system, doesn’t require root, and doesn’t trip Knox. See the full safety picture.

Why do YouTube tutorials link Drive files instead of GitHub?

Convenience for the creator, risk for you. Always prefer the official GitHub releases URL — it’s the only copy you can verify against the developer’s own published hashes.
